Under the sea!
Eagerly awaited sequel release tomorrow: Bioshock 2, follow-up to the much-lauded 2007 video game about a plane crash survivor cast adrift (underdrift?) in Rapture, an Art Deco underwater city designed by one Andrew Ryan (note name’s similarities to Ayn Rand), Objectivism-influenced leader of men. To date, Metacritic has Bioshock at #2 in all-time Xbox 360 rankings, and #5 in all-time PC game rankings.
A deal was cut for a Bioshock movie within a few months of the game’s release; Gore Verbinski (The Ring remake, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3, but not 4) was planning to direct, but the project has been cancelled, reinstated, and delayed. Verbinski’s still on board to produce, but Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) is now set to direct.
To close, a well-caught homage seen on Kitsch/Posh back in July:
The guy didn’t watch the movie, so we’ll never know whether it was in fact a dubbed copy of the 1997 TV-movie that brought together Tim Thomerson and Jeff Speakman, or…something else?
Bioshock 3 is in early stages of development, and while the movie’s still listed as 2010, that seems unlikely. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them hand-in-hand sometime in late 2011.
